We think that we have something to give to the world, others or even God. Too often we undervalue the Holy Spirit and overvalue our own righteousness. The true Christian life is not accomplished by sucking out sin, but by being filled with the Holy Spirit. But if this water represents God, and we are filled with God, we are emptied of us. But at the end of the day, getting all of you and your sin out of your life is next to impossible.
Now think of this glass like your life-if you wanted to get every little known sin out of your life, what could you do? You could (and maybe even have) worked really hard to remove the sin. The only way to get the air out of it is to fill it with something that is not air (pour water in it). Use a vacuum to suck it out, but that would crush it. Help me with this thought experiment: If I wanted to get all the air out of this glass, how could I do it? Cover it. That was not an accident that Brand preached on that he knew what we were studying and chose something that would compliment what God is sewing in our heart.
It was good to have him with us.We are going to pick up on the same theme that Brad preached on-loving one another-and look at that as we continue in John. He is such a genuine picture of faith, love and laughter. There are some people in the church that just have a way of making the Christian life real-Brad Bigney, our speaker last week, is one of those people.
